The PSP-Phone Idea Denied

January 16, 2009 - Wouldn't it be cool if you could have a phone that was as much about playing games as it was talking to your friends? Maybe with cutting edge graphics, WiFi multiplayer and support from major developers!?!? Yeah well, keep dreaming. IGN has learned that a proposal by Sony Ericsson to Sony late last year concerning the use of the PlayStation brand to develop a PSP-type phone has been denied.

Apparently, Sony Ericsson was in the planning stages of developing a gaming focused phone, looking to capitalize on the huge growth that the gaming sector has experienced the last few years. Sony refused the idea, stating that they would only license out the PlayStation brand if the company ever decided to produce handsets independently. The news has sparked rumors that Sony is effectively looking for a way out of the mobile joint venture with Ericsson.

Sony Ericsson in the past has produced headsets featuring other Sony brands including Walkman and Cyber-shot, which makes you wonder just exactly why Sony would deny the use of arguably their strongest brand, which would probably yield the highest possibility for success. A Sony Ericsson spokeswoman commented, "In the past, we have been keen that our product proposition lives up to brand promise, and we feel at the moment the technical specs are not high enough to put such a prestigious brand on a phone."

The news of the denied proposal comes at a bad time for Sony Ericsson, who is in the middle of cutting costs during the financial slowdown. Stay tuned to IGN for more on Sony and their growing economic concerns.

I think that this is not the best idea for Sony...
The PSP will look too messy and too much of a PDA!
It will trash other phone companies as well...
When people see that some phones are expensive, they'd rather buy a PSP/phone than an ordinary phone!
The massive speaker on the right is just gay!
It's a waste of space, instead, there could be an extra analog and space for buttons!
I don't mind the spinning thing though, it makes the PSP look fancy!
But after a while it will scratch the corners and makes the spinning loose...
Just like flippy and slide phones! They break so easily, and so often...
I have the new Motorola and I know how it feels....

Well actaully the idea of advanciing modern technology into something like this sounded pretty kool..
but i can understand why everyone else lduznt like it ...it lookx too complicated and its not the "psp"... lol the first picture looked even crazier..but this one is just a image of what they would have done..

It is a good idea Elite, don't take me wrong about that...
It's just that it's not very practical for a gaming console!
I would like a PSP/Phone, but imagine having to take the PSP around with you everytime?
And if you happen to accidentally drop it, thats it! Finito to your PSP/Phone!!!
The iPhone is a good idea cause the iPod fits with the phone...
It's slick, small and has alot of features in such a small machine! But again, there are tons of people who would love a PSP/Phone!
