Sales decline hits all PlayStation hardware
Sony Corp. has confirmed that it’s games division recorded a sales and
operating revenue loss of approximately 32.2 percent for the third
quarter ended December 31, 2008, with sales of all three PlayStation
hardware brands down from the previous year.
PlayStation 3 shifted 4.46 million units representing an overall loss
of 44,000 units compared to the same period in 2007, while PlayStation
Portable clocked up 5.08 million units sold, down 68,000 in total.
PlayStation 2 also suffered a dip in sales, down 2.88 million to 2.52 million units sold.
The Japanese hardware manufacturer attributed a 97 percent decrease in
operating income of JPY 0.4 billion (USD 4 million) on the appreciation
of the yen against the euro, in addition to the decline in software and
hardware sales.
It wasn’t all doom and gloom, however. PS3 software sales were up from
the previous year by a total of 14.8 million units, totalling 40.8
million during the quarter.
Despite this, both PSP and PS2 software sales were down, dropping 2.8 million and 31.2 million, respectively.
