Under 24 hours: Home hacked; SKFU expose vulnerabilities

Post by havoc802 on Fri Dec 12, 2008 10:30 am

Cracking systems even before you can finish saying the sentence "Sony
hates hackers" is nothing really new. We've seen homebrew developers
sprint to the finish line a mere couple of hours after an official
firmware has been released. Still, knowing how truly feasible expedient
hacking can be done, that doesn't make it any less sad -- especially
for Sony.

The highly-hullaballoo'd HOME just opened its doors
today; not even 24 hours yet and it's now already a hack statistic.
Worse, there's a full list of exposed vulnerabilities in it that we're
pretty sure Sony won't exactly be too proud about, and will bring a
huge grin of "I told you so" from Microsoft.

from SKFU's blog, he shows little restraint in showing his
disappointment with Home, saying that he can only agree with
Microsoft's comment of "It feels like 2005 tech in 2008. I'm not sure
that's what people want."

But one of the vulnerabilities he
discovered would be the ability to delete any file from HOME servers
and download any content from HOME as you may please. What can be
viewed as the biggest facepalm item for Sony, however, would be that
there is the ability to upload any file to the HOME server.

Meanwhile, even Alek, in a post at Sceners.org,
agrees with SKFU when the latter expressed discontent over the two-year
delay, only to be presented with a HOME beta "on a technical standard
from 2005 with crappy graphics, a few boring areas and many many many
many many many many bugs."

He did say, though, that launching
under open beta would necessarily mean bugs and "tons of errors trying
to connect this first days." Alek also noted that it looks as if all
the houses under the closed beta have been deleted, so you guys would
have to recreate them again -- hopefully the cost won't be too much,
but I doubt that somehow.

So, at the end of the day, it wasn't
exactly the grand opening we were all hoping for. You can check out the
vulnerabilities list over at SKFU's blog linked below. But remember,
this is just for information. Don't use it for some other backhanded
tactics you boys might wanna try and cook up, alright?

Thanks to SKFU and Tcraw77813 for sending in your tips!
